Barbados blackbelly are a heritage breed of Caribbean hair (shedding) sheep, on the Livestock Conservancy Priority List (Threatened), known for:
* parasite and disease resistance, heat tolerance
* multiple births (high rate of # of lambs born)
* good mothering (high rate of # of lambs weaned)
* browsing habits, good for landscape control of invasive woody plants
* lean carcass traits, similar to goats.
Both sexes are:
* naturally polled (no horns)
* do not require shearing, crutching, disbudding or tail docking.
* black, slow growing hooves, only need trimming 1-2x/year
We have 2 ram lambs, 4 ewe lambs (at $400 each) and wethers ($350) born April 2026. We can make “starter pairs” for breeding. The 2 rams and 1 ewe lamb are scrapie resistant (Codon 171 AARR) by parentage; all the rest are moderately resistant (AAQR or AARK). Also a sibling pair of “bottle babies”, ewe & wether, who are very tame/small, price negotiable.
Price includes Scrapie ID, CDT vaccinations and Barbados Blackbelly Sheep Assoc. Int’l. (BBSAI) registration and transfer of ownership (for rams & ewes).
Out of state sales require a Certificate of Veterinary inspection, fee paid by the buyer.
We do health checks to monitor anemia caused by GI parasites. We have not had to “deworm” any of these sheep because of their natural resistance. They can be raised organically. This breed has great appeal for ethnic markets. More information will be sent on request, photos on our social media page
