Getting the site started

Let me know your thoughts.

What categories can be eliminated, combined, or are missing?

What tags do we need to have?

What settings do you think need to change?

Any other feedback before we go live?

Thanks Niko!

Poking around I’m not sure I can actually set a moderator for a particular tag, looks like it can only be for a category. I can make you a general moderator and you can follow the #beef or #cow tags and just moderate what your comfortable with. If that works for you.

I’m still learning the capabilities of the software, so maybe I will find a way.

What’s the members only tag for?
Site looks great!

Hey @DanielleL Welcome to the site!

The Members Only Category is the only part of the site that is not open to the public. So to view this category you need to be a member of trust_level_1 or higher. Which basically means in general you have to be a signed up member of the site and look around for a bit before you can see this section.

I could see people not wanting to share specifics about a particular situation and it be visible to just anyone who comes along and finds the site. This gives a bit more private space for those types of conversations.

Note that the site is currently in ā€œbootstrap modeā€ which accelerates members trust levels. This allows the site to build traction at the beginning and will turn off when there are 50 active users on the site.

That works fine. We will find out how things go.

I’ve been enjoying poking around. I definitely agree with a requirement to make a profile inside, in order to be able to see sensitive posts–and I trust that people will be thoughtful about what they are willing to share publicly. In fact, I wonder if it makes sense somewhere to outline that there are levels of privacy BUT folks should always be aware that the internet is never truly private and they should act accordingly?

As far as tags, my defaults run to animal types, #dairy (with animal type), state. Possibly #hay #graze #custom #health. Nick, will participants be able to add their own tags as well? Or just us?

Lastly…I was on both NEPC and NEGN board calls to day and pointed folks toward the site to check it out and make profiles. I hope it’s OK to do so. I did let them all know this is a soft-opening/test phase while we work some details out, and that we are not [quite] ready to publicize widely yet!

This would be good to put somewhere on an intro page. I think the Welcome topic is a good place to add this. I also want to add some info on that page about checking your profile settings and making use your email digest are set how you want. Maybe even a bit of a walkthoguht about the site, expectations about each category, and any other general guidance.

All added! A full list of tags can be found here.

As of now only moderators can add tags. But I think to begin with it might be useful to open this up to allow anyone to create tags. This might help getting the tags needed at the beginning. We can always close it down later and clean up tags as they are created. Thoughts?

Absolutely OK to invite anyone you feel won’t be scared away by a ā€˜soft opening’. At this point I have gone through most of the settings and I think it would be useful in a soft opening sort of way to invite people personally to use it. For at least a little longer we should hold off on distributing this widely.

I agree it makes sense for our early users to be able to add tags…users are the best folks to decide what they want to talk about!

Consider it done. Now all users can create tags.

This is actually already spelled out decently well on the community guidelines page and the Welcome topic links to that page.

Looks good! Thanks for the effort.

Thank everyone for your feedback. It has come to my attention that some think this is just another listserv so I have updated the welcome topic to be a bit more clear. Let me know what you think.
