GPS Cattle Ear Tags

Howdy all,

I have a small cow-calf herd that I graze across several leased pastures in the Upper Valley area. As I grow my herd and work to manage it across a relatively wide footprint, I’m hoping to find the right solution that will help me monitor location, breeding, and health related data remotely at a reasonable cost.

After evaluating several options, I decided to field GPS tags from 701x with my herd this year. Specifically, I plan to field approximately 3 XTpro Tags and 20 XTlite tags at a property in Tunbridge for the 2025 grazing season. I purchased these tags with my own funds and did not receive any benefit from 701x to post here - I just want to share my experience with this technology as I learn more about it’s pros and cons throughout the season. I’m also curious if anyone else has used GPS ear tags (from 701x or other companies) and has tips for getting the most out of the technology.

I’ll plan to post a qualitative update mid-summer followed by an end of season/winter update where I dive into a more quantitative cost-benefit analysis for how the tags performed in my operation. If anyone here is interested in the technology and has specific questions they would like me to comment on, please let me know and I’ll do my best to address them through my field notes this season. Best,

Dan

I have considered this concept but just for tracking incase they get out and cannot be quickly located, which happenned several years ago. I would only get a handful of tags. Let me know how it works out.

I currently have a cellular camera that can be accessed on my phone and I will monitor it in various situations. For example, a sick calf.
